PLAY THERAPY

"Play Therapy is based upon the fact that play is the child's natural medium of self-expression.  It is an opportunity which is given to the child to 'play out' his feelings and problems just as, in certain types of adult therapy, an individual 'talks out' his difficulties."   ~Virginia Axline

It is important for children who have survived traumatic experiences to understand and express their emotions in a therapeutic manner to begin the healing process. Children naturally express thoughts and emotions during play.

Play Therapy is beneficial for children with ::

  • Attachment related issues.
  • Physical, emotional and sexual trauma.
  • Difficulty dealing with loss.
  • ADHD diagnoses.
  • Communication and sensory issues.
  • Have difficulty identifying and communicating feelings appropriately.
  • Have shown resistance to other types of therapy.

Benefits of Play Therapy include ::

  • Anxiety reduction.
  • Enhanced sense of trust in others.
  • Enhanced self confidence.
  • Improved behavior.
  • Increased self awareness of feelings and appropriate ways to express them.
  • Increased focus on relaxation and stress management.

NECCO Center offers families and other caregivers the option of skills training so they can apply Play Therapy skills at home and during visitations.
